Situational Analysis of Capacity Building Needs for IWRM in South Asia
Completed an Inception Report for the study titled, ‘Situational Analysis of Capacity Building Needs for IWRM in South Asia’. The objective of this study is to carry out a stock taking exercise of the existing Capacity Building (CB) systems and structures within each country of South Asia with a view to its suitability for promoting a shift from sectoral to integrated paradigm for water understanding, policy, and practice.
Zonal database of CSO’s working in the water sector
Prepared a concept note for Zonal database of CSO’s working in the water sector. The objective of compiling this database is to map resources, expertise, knowledge base and capacities of Indian CSOs members particularly in the field of advocacy and formulation of the networking agenda with special focus on regional issues This database will not be just data collection but through this the linkages between different organizations will develop through a ‘bottom up’ approach. |

Network meeting of CSO’s working in water sector.
Cap-Net South Asia in collaboration with WWN (Women and Water Network),
Cap-Net India, Gender Studies Unit of National Institute of Advance Studies (NIAS), and Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India and supported by Freshwater Action Network organized a Network Meeting of Civil Society Organizations in Water Sector in India during January 29 - 30, 2005 in Hyderabad, India. The objectives of the meeting were to understand issues of capacities enhancement, advocacy need assessment and strategies to address them through utilizing the network and to network with likeminded organizations and individuals working on issues of democratizing development, management and utilization of water resources in India and South Asia and to understand critical role played by advocacy groups. |

Representations at the following events:
"Conservation and Management of Lakes - Sharing of experiences and lessons learned"
Workshop was organized by the Indian Association of Aquatic Biologists, Hyderabad and sponsored by the India Water Partnership, New Delhi at St. John’s Regional Seminary, Ramanthapur, Hyderabad.
Workshop on ‘Scarcity and the Politics of Allocation’
A workshop was held during 6-7 June 2005 at Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex, Brighton, UK, as a culmination of Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) ‘Science in Society’ research project titled ‘Science, Technology and Water Scarcity: Investigating the Solutions’, Its focus was on instigating debate on notions of scarcity in general and resource scarcity in particular from an interdisciplinary perspective, based on short commentaries and submissions from a few leading thinkers. In context of developing capacities to conceptualize water scarcity in relation to its sociological underpinnings, discussions during the meeting challenged some of the entrenched Neo-Malthusian and naturalistic explanations of water scarcity.
Conference on Irrigation Management: Policies and Practices
A conference on Irrigation Management Practices was organized by Project Management Unit EC aided project ‘Minor Irrigation in Orissa’ during 20-21 June in Bhubaneshwar, Orissa, to draw on the experience both in Orissa and elsewhere to recommend practical solutions to future funding and support of Irrigation Management Transfer (IMT).
The 2nd NARBO training workshop - River Basin Management and Organizations
A training course on -River Basin Management and Organizations- was held from April 25 to 29 at Beach Hotel on Negombo in Sri Lanka. Twenty-seven participants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal Pakistan and Sri Lanka took part in the training. |

Visitor from Global Water Partnership Secretariat
Dr. Mercy Dikito-Wachtmeister, Network Officer, Global Water Partnership Secretariat visited CapNet South Asia Regional Secretariat during the month of July, 2005. Dr. Dikito-Wachtmeister had a detailed discussion about activities of CapNet South Asia and expressed her interest and support from GWP for further initiatives in the water sector. |

Networking - extending the outreach
CapNet South Asia Regional Secretariat has facilitated for various workshops, ToTs, and projects undertaken by independent researchers, to extend outreach and dissemination of information. CapNet SA Regional Secretariat has also networked with various organizations/institutes working on water issues such as Water Aid, GWP etc. One such positive step towards networking is collaboration with GWP-SAS.
GWP-SAS and CapNet SA collaboration - As a first step towards forging closer links for effective promotion of integrated perspectives on water, GWP-SAS and CapNet SA have an honorary representation on each others Board of Governors/ Regional Council.

| Ongoing activities and Immediate plans for the next six months |

Capacity Building and Social Learning for IWRM: Regional documents for WWF4 – Three regional papers highlighting IWRM progress, Capacity Building needs, achievements, and obstacles with a focus on actions on the ground with a global perspective are sought for. These papers will be synthesized as one paper for distribution at the 4th World Water Forum to be held in Mexico in 2006. |

Regional Meeting – CapNet South Asia Regional Secretariat is planning to hold a regional meeting to consolidate linkages between networks of South Asian region and to bring out the cohesion among key players for better implementation of capacity building of IWRM in this region. Objectives of the meeting will be to discuss regional issues, review past work done, future plans, and consolidating governance of the network. |

Initiative taken for CSO’s – One of the outcomes/recommendations of the Network Meeting of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) working in Water Sector in India which was organized during January 29 - 30, 2005 in Hyderabad, India, was to consolidate scattered organizations and further extend network and connectivity of different organizations working in isolation. The objective of compiling this database is to map resources, expertise, knowledge base, and capacities of Indian CSOs members particularly in the field of advocacy and formulation of the networking agenda with special focus on regional issues This database will not be just data collection but through this linkages between different organizations will develop through a ‘bottom up’ approach. The output of this initiative will be a document containing information about various Civil Society Organisations working in the water sector in the South Asia zone. |
